First of all… I am DONE with ALL Christmas orders!  They have ALL been mailed.  That being said, I will be taking the next week OFF!  :)

I am tired.  So so tired.  My back feels like it’s on fire, and has felt that way for the past few weeks.  I have ignored the pain and pushed through, though.

I haven’t spent a lot of time with my kids or husband.  I have been so focused on getting these orders out and that’s it.

In the 3 Christmas’ that I have owned my business I have been shocked by many things.  But I think what shocks me the most is when people get mad at me because I’m not working fast enough.  It’s just not good enough.

Please note.  I am not a robot.  I am not a machine.  I am a person who happens to own a business, but I also have a life.  I have 2 small kids, and a husband and many things outside of SheyB.  I am not sewing 24/7.  Not sure why people might think that, but I swear some do.

I hate to be a downer, but I have been wanting to say this for a while.  I figure that this is my blog, so I should be able to say and blog what I want, right?  Well, I think so.

I think what some don’t understand is how hard we all work.  How much time and dedication we put into our business’.  My turnaround time isn’t a month because I am lazy and eating bon bons rather than sewing.  It is a month, because that’s how many orders I am getting.  It’s a month because I have children I want to spend time with.  It’s a month because that’s what it is.

What’s sad, though, is Christmas time is when so many of us handmade business owners are treated the worst.  I have been yelled at, hung up on, cussed out, called “the worst person ever”.  It used to bother me more than it does now.  I used to shed tears over the words people threw at me.  I no longer shed tears, but I am still just as appalled now as I was from the get go.  I will never understand this need to batter people during the holiday season.

Handmade business owners work very hard.  We *handmake* everything we sell.

We are not Target, we are not Walmart.  We do not mass produce our items.

All I’m saying, please treat us with respect and kindness, not with hostility and nastiness.

On that note.  I am announcing a BIG change coming to *Shey*[B].  And the reason for this change is not only because of what was said above, but because I think this change will be better for me, and for you all as well.

Starting February 1st, I will no longer be offering “made to order” items.  I will be making EVERY single strap cover and camera strap before listing it, so they will all be ready to ship.  This allows me more flexibility, say if I want to go on a vacation… I can!  ;)

This also means that there is never be a 1 month turnaround time again!  Yes!!  I will explain more later.

  3. I am absolutely shocked that people actually have the nerve to call you names! I can’t believe that people don’t realize that ordering handmade means HAND MADE. It takes time! I set out to order mostly handmade this year for Christmas and I was very careful to get all those orders in as early as possible so they could be made and sent out to make it on time. I check turnaround times and follow what they say. That’s what you have to do if you’re going to do that!

    I admit to being nervous about my order, but on the USPS side and not on your side. Our post office is known for losing our mail and I really didn’t want this package to be one that was lost! I seriously had another package that was listed as being in my city for over two weeks before they finally got around to delivering it!

    It’s too bad that you have to switch the way you do things, but it sounds like it will be better for your sanity and physical well being!

  5. So sorry people have been so terrible to you…I agree, handmade takes time and if people only knew how much time and effort it took into getting things made, they would be more understanding and appreciative.

  6. I’ve been considering changing to pre made rather than custom orders too!!! Sounds like a smart thing to do!

  7. I think you said it well. We are NOT robots. Last holiday season I was crazy busy (and thankful for that!) with custom orders and made to order items. I realized quickly that I would not last long that way and, even though I still offer some made to order items, the majority of my things are ready to ship. It does allow for more flexibility.For me work happens when school is in session and ends when the school bell rings! And then some at night again when all are tucked in tight to bed. I love being able to create AND be with my family, but my family will always come first.
    I hope 2011 is another great year for SheyB and that there is less happening of name calling, cussing and being hung up on. :)

  9. yay for you! i am just starting up my etsy business and am learning that it is so so so hard to keep up with all the demand. It is great that there is demand but people do not realize that it takes precious *time* to make handmade items. Enjoy your holiday luv. :)gina

  10. It’s a shame that the demand for things brings out the mean in people during the holiday season. I follow you on Twitter, and have seen how very hard you’ve been working. I’m with everyone else who said it… you deserve a break! A nice, long, snuggle with your kids, enjoy time with your husband, rest your tired body kind of break! I hope you enjoy every second of it :)

I agree people should be nice to you, but I think that you complaining on your blog over and over again over how many orders you have to get out is a little weird also, because for every order you are making $30 so for all those orders it adds up to a lot of money, and if you can’t sew all the orders in time without complaining maybe you should limit your business!

Sorry, didn’t mean for that comment to sound rude at all but when I re read it I noticed it did, I was just trying to point out the blessings of all the money from it, and that you are choosing to take that many orders so maybe you should limit them because you deserve it, and your husband and kids deserve it too!!!

    • I think you are taking my posts about my business as complaints, but they most definitely are not. I am blessed, and I know it. When I am talking about the amount of orders I have it’s not a complaint at all. It’s a fact. And I am rectifying the stress by changing everything in my store starting in February. My sole complaint was only about the way people treat me and other handmade shop owners. ;) Thanks for commenting Macie!

    Seriously, girl I totally feel ya!!
    I have a biz on etsy as well (in fact I advertised on your blog before) and I have been APALLED by how people think it is ok to treat me sometimes. I know on my end that i am working my finger to a bone getting items out, and treating everyone with the thankfulness I have for them, but to receive nasty emails after a hard days’ work is just wrong! I have been reduced to tears once this holiday season as well, and have even felt like I never want to sell during x-mas again! Anyway, it was actually totally refreshing to hear you vent the same feelings. I am so so so thankful that people make purchases from me, as I know you are, but that doesn’t give them free reign in how they treat us. It is possible to be completely thankful but still partially IRKED at the same time:) OH and I love how you set “production time” straight!! I totally love when people think it is because we sit around spending their money, eating twinkies, until the last possible second to make their item. HA! ORR what is worse is when people choose to ignore the production time when they make their purchase, but yet they are mad at YOU when they realize later how long it will take. Like it is our fault they can’t read?!?!

  18. I am so sorry people have been rude to you! I was debating about doing custom orders anymore and I think I am with you. Having things ready to ship is much less stressful. Good luck with your new plan! I hope your family has a wonderful 2011!
