A couple of weeks ago, I looked at Jess and said… let’s do ____ velvet cake.
We thought about it for a bit and then I said… BLACK!
And of course we immediately starting singing that song by Alannah Myles. You know that song don’t you? Black Velvet? THIS song? Please say yes. If you are tempted to say no, then don’t. You will then successfully make me feel old. haha!!
Last night Jess came over. Black Velvet Cake was on our minds. Also on our minds? N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer. There was more in our little mini concert in my kitchen. We danced for 2 straight hours, laughed the entire night and made 2 awesome cakes!
Let’s talk Black Velvet first, though. Cuz Black Velvet Cake just … well, you’ll see. It’s plain awesome. Red Velvet Cake? Phhhhhfffff! Please.
After Jess and I made this cake we were practically jumping up and down. At this point we hadn’t even frosted it yet! But it was so exciting. Don’t you all jump up and down with excitement when you’re baking? No? Fine. Hmpf.
Now please look upon the spectacular amazingness of the Black Velvet Cake. :: imagine angels singing right now ::
Oooh. I’m such a tease. ;)
OK. Que the angelic singers again…
I know, right?! What did I tell you?
Seriously. Who needs Red Velvet Cake? Not me. {fact about me: I don’t actually like cake. But I hear this particular cake tasted great}
Of course we didn’t stop at Black. Before we made the black we made a Green Velvet Cake… but it was rather underwhelming due to the lack of batter. Still pretty, though. :)
The color green was so pretty. A limey olive.
So how many times have you drooled down your chin so far during this post? I can’t blame you.
2 cakes… both great.
But. The Black Velvet Cake has my heart.
What do you think? Red or Black Velvet?
Recipe:
Cake
1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® white cake mix
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 tablespoon unsweetened baking cocoa
1 bottle black DUFF food color {or DUFF Lime Green or DUFF… whatever color}
edited to add: the DUFF food coloring DOES NOT have a bad aftertaste or any taste at all. Also, when eating this cake, it will not turn your mouth black in any way.
Frosting from HERE.
Enjoy!

I’ve never even had RED velvet cake. I should probably try it somewhere, huh? I’m sure San Francisco has REAL red velvet cake somewhere. Time to ask the Twittosphere, me thinks!
I love frosting. The frosting looks so good I would smear it on graham crackers and eat mini frosting-sammiches!
